Denys has conducted over 60 workshops throughout Canada, Italy, Mexico, Greece, Turkey, and the U.S.A. and is represented in many collections. He has organized and led 40 ceramics oriented travel excursions to Mexico, Turkey, Thailand, Greece, Morocco, Laos,Myanmar,Spain,Japan and Italy.  For several years he organized and taught adobe bottle kiln building workshops. This unique type of kiln design is a synthesis of his observation of simple Mexican wood-fired kilns and traditional brick kilns in other locations. An article on these kilns appears in the Canadian ceramics magazine, CONTACT,#102,1995.

In his own work, James has combined traditional bas-relief and innovative techniques of slip and colour application to develop a unique way of 'drawing and painting' on the wet clay surface. CERAMICS, ART and PERCEPTION, VOL.20, 1995.

In 2005 he was a workshop presenter at the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Art in Davis California.

He received his education at the University of British Columbia and the Banff Centre, School of Fine Arts. He has been on the faculty at several art schools and colleges, and is currently an exhibiting studio artist living on Saltspring Island, B.C., Canada.
