The Echo of Clay

The creation of ceramics is a bit complicated, not only because it requires space, tools, and some equipment, but also since it needs to arrange work according to the weather. The active and passive factors are intertwined, and literally integrate into one's life. The creator must also gather his strengths and keep thinking to promote the continuous evolution of his ceramic creation history.

Ceramic art creation is a personal research project. Some people do “basic” researches, while some others do “extreme” ones. The creativity in it could be a lot or few, like scientific researches.

This study requires long-term training and sufficient experience. Starting from a piece of mud, to the still work that freezes, the process in between follows general steps with individualized arrangements. It is all about evoking the echo of the material so that it can exist by itself in another way in peace, bringing delight to the creator and pleasure to others. I think that the cultivation of a creative thinking of ceramic art is indispensable.

We must not forget to emphasize the importance of clay in ceramic art creation. From a ceramic work, we can almost identify as many visual elements as in painting works, and the structural issues involved in ceramic works often seem to be no different from common sense and are not worthy of further study. However, the creation of it requires knowledge about architectural mechanics, and the creation process often resembles constructing a building. It can be seen that although clay is common, it can reflect a broad intellectual and aesthetic spirit and can exist for a long time.

As creators, these six ceramic artists all have a proud education background. With different research directions, they gather in Kui Yuan Gallery, showing a good appearance.

The wintertime in Guangzhou is the proper time to read these warm works carefully and find the response of the clay to our eyes.
